The best way to discover Venice, especially for those who don’t have a lot of time, is to get lost in its alleys and passages. You could discover Venetian squares and churches of amazing beauty. Saint Mark’s Basilica has to be visited. Entrance is free of charge; inside you’ll find precious mosaics that represent the history of Saint Mark and the Old and New Testament. Outside there is the beautiful Piazza San Marco, overlooking the San Marco basin where boats and gondolas pass the canals. From there, you could visit the Campanile, also known as ‘Torre dell’Orologio (Clock Tower) to admire the city from above and enjoy a breathtaking view!
In the same area you’ll find the Palazzo Ducale, the Duke’s Palace, which houses an important part of the Venetian history and of Venetian life.
 
This visit also allows you to see the famous Ponte dei Sospiri, the Bridge of Sighs. The heart of this Venetian city is situated in the Rialto area, at the foot of the Ponte di Rialto, the Rialto Bridge, where the very famous fish market takes place every morning. This is the most authentic part of the city where the Venetians do their grocery shopping, bargain prices and where you hear the typical Venetian dialect. Here you can buy the food to prepare a nice dinner in the apartment you rented.
 
In case you still might have a day left, don’t miss out on a visit to the islands of Murano, Burano e Torcello. The first one is the closest of the islands and is very famous for its glass art. It is possible to visit the glass ovens to watch the professional glass workers at work.
Burano is the most colorful of the islands: each home is painted in a different color and the impact is astonishing. Up to this day it is also possible to see the women of the island work the lace. To finish there is Torcello, nowadays a nature reserve and home to only 20 people, a little gem that houses a church of the seventh century. 

At the end of your visit you can take the vaporetto, the ‘bus boat’, to return to your accommodation while getting a last glimpse of the city along the Canal Grande.
