Santa Croce is in the heart of Venice. Some of the most prestigious Carnival mask shops are in this area. Although the government of the Serenissima Republic tried to ban the wearing of masks as a "frivolous pursuit", Venetians of the upper classes continued to use them, especially during Carnival time when they wished to go around Venice incognito.
